The wife is the most important person in one's life. She is the one who takes care of us till the end. Though we are tied up with the trials and tribulations of everyday life, at least one day in a year we can make her happy, by taking her out and relieving her from the mundane domestic chores. It is our wedding day.
Our wedding day falls on 3rd Feb. We were married in 1974. We are now celebrating our 44th wedding day. It is a special day for us. We have been celebrating this day every year. When I was working, I used to take a day's leave. Everyone knows how we celebrate from 9 AM to 9 PM.
We get up at 6 AM and after morning rituals, wearing a new dress, we start at 9 AM. We first visit the temple, perform prayers to our family deity, and offer some cash in the Hundi. Then we visit our mother to seek her blessings. She gifts my wife with some money. We then proceed to a hotel for breakfast. From there we go for a noon show movie. After the show, we have lunch in a hotel and do some shopping. We then go to the beach to relish cut mango spread with chilli powder and cone ice cream. We then return home, have a bath, and again go to the temple, then for night dinner in the hotel. We retire at 9 PM
The first anniversary in 1975 was a memorable one. Only on that day, we planned to celebrate the whole day every year. On our first wedding day, I wanted to gift my wife something to her liking. I asked her what she wanted. She said she needed a steel cupboard. She liked only Godrej and not any other make. [ It was about Rs.1000 as against my salary of Rs.500 pm ]
Ten days before the D-day, we went to a Godrej showroom on Mount Road in Chennai. We came to know that the "seconds' grade was cheaper than "perfect" due to excise incidence. Among the colours they had, olive green was popular. But my wife preferred steel grey. To our disappointment, they did not have seconds in steel grey.
The manager suggested trying their factory at Ambattur. We decided to go in person the next day. The manager was a nice person and took efforts to find seconds in steel grey. It was not available. Somehow, I wanted to get it so that my wife was not disappointed on our first wedding day.
I wrote a letter to the sales manager at Bombay and explained to him the whole episode and the need to get "seconds" grade in steel grey as I wanted to gift my wife on our wedding day on 3rd Feb. I got a reply, informing that the cupboard would reach us on 2nd Feb positively, and it was delivered on time. We are still using it in good condition.
